Masters of alloy technology

With history dating back over 60 years, Kymera’s sub-brand Reading Alloys has been recognized as a global leader in the design, development and production of specialty alloy products. As one of the pioneers of the modern titanium industry, our facility has been instrumental in the development of many titanium alloys available today, including Ti 6Al-4V. With this foundation, we have continued to grow our footprint beyond the titanium industry, expanding our supply to the steel, superalloy, aluminum and powdered metal industries as well. With a wealth of metallurgical expertise gained through decades of experience, our competitive advantage is our technical capability. We are world-renowned experts in aluminothermic smelting and alloy development with innovation applied throughout the entire production process including melting, processing, inspecting and certification. The unique combination of our master alloys’ physical and mechanical properties allow for a dynamic range of metallurgical alternatives to meet specific performance requirements.

Superior Hydride / De-hydride processing

The Hydride-Dehydride (HDH) process is used primarily for Ti and Ti-6Al4V powder production. It relies upon the brittle nature of corresponding metal hydrides. These metal hydrides are milled and screened to produce fine powders. After the powder is sized, interstitial hydrogen is subsequently removed using vacuum and heat to produce finished metallic powders. These powders have blocky and angular, spongey, or equiaxed morphology and can also be magnetically screened and acid washed to remove any ferromagnetic contamination. The brittle hydrides are then crushed and classified to the desired particle size range. The crushing process produces a range of particle size distributions (PSD). The PSDs can be controlled via classification methods to meet upper and/or lower limits. Kymera offers powders down to 325 mesh (45 microns) distribution. Primary advantages of HDH titanium powders are that they are free flowing with careful selection of raw material feedstock and powder morphology, in addition to PSD. These powders have been successfully used in a wide range of traditional PM applications to make cost effective net shape and near-net shape products.
